Earth, Moon, & Sun

Class Bulletin Board
Phases of the Moon
Learning about the Moon
What We Want to Know
During this mini unit, the students learned about the similarities, differences, and relationships between the Sun, Earth, and Moon. Some of the lessons included exploration of the surface of the Moon, revolution and rotation, the cause of the seasons, shadows, and the phases of the Moon.
Students explored how different size meteors affected the size and depth of craters through this experiments. They dropped balls of different sizes and weights into a pan of flour.
To understand why shadows change throughout the day, students and their partners traced their shadows at three different times - 8:10 a.m., 12:20 p.m., and 2:00 p.m.
Students recorded their findings through the unit in their Science Notebook and then wrapped up by writing about one thing that they learned.
